Oncologist Salary
Oncologists have one of the most important occupations within the medical field. They specialize in diagnosing and treating patients who have cancer. Unfortunately for society, as scientists find more factors that cause cancer, the rate of cancer patients is getting higher. However, this is a good thing for oncologists because this is what they study. That being said, oncologists are among the highest paid professionals due to the fact that they specialize in such a specific subject.
Average Salary
Oncologists in the United States earn between $160,000 all the way up to $300,000. Yes, the scale is very wide, but this is because there are many factors that affect an oncologist’s salary. One of the major factors is that there are several different types of oncology, and another factor is location.
Specialization
There are so many different types of oncologists that specialize in certain types of cancer. For example, there are gynecology oncologists that specialize in cervical cancer in women. There are also radiation oncologists that use radiation in order to get rid of cancer. With each specialization, there is a possibility to earn a higher salary due to the fact that not everybody specializes in that type of cancer.
Location and Type of Facility
Another factor is the location of the facility, as well as the type of facility. Working in a big city like San Francisco means that the cost of living is higher, which translates into its citizens earning a higher salary than smaller cities. In the bigger cities, the economy is more active, therefore everything from gasoline to rent is higher. Also, oncologists who work in private practices, non-profit, and university facilities earn more than in other places. So, in order to earn as much as possible, it would help to try to work for these types of facilities versus a public hospital.
